Part III

Finding the Way Forward

Part III focuses on the time after transition, when your workload is increasing and you begin to experience some of the both positive and stressful aspects of professional practice. Chapter 6 explores the central role of supervision in supporting you in practice, identifying the different types of supervision and the role each has to play in developing good practice, and emphasising your active engagement in the process. The following chapter provides an overview of managing the stress you might experience as a social work professional. Of course, not all stress is negative; stress can act as a motivator. However, in the longer term, to maintain your energy for the profession you will need to develop your understanding of how the job might impact on you and your ability to practise to ensure stress does not develop into ‘burnout’. The final chapter leads you to begin thinking about the future, drawing on reflections from your first year in practice to make and develop plans for your future professional development. Remember, gaining your social work qualification was just the start of your journey; much more lies ahead and you just need to work out which way to go to move you forward!
